Saik’uz First Nation voice opposition to Alberta’s pipeline plan
Saik’uz — Saik’uz First Nation is the latest community to voice opposition to an Alberta government plan to propose a new bitumen pipeline ending on B-C’s coast.
A statement from Saik’uz Chief Priscilla Mueller acknowledges Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s reference to economic reconciliation through potential Indigenous participation in the proposed project — but Mueller says reconciliation requires respect for decisions Indigenous communities have already made.
She says more than 100 First Nations that signed a declaration aiming to protect the Fraser River from an earlier pipeline proposal have consistently rejected proposals to build bitumen pipelines through their territories.
The Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative and Union of B-C Indian Chiefs have also issued statements saying they oppose the plan.
