PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George City Councillors are being asked to greenlight the proposed Citizen Recognition Medal program that aims to recognize up to three people a year.

A Select Committee has been meeting monthly since March, and their recommendations for a framework for this award program will be presented at Monday’s (Nov. 3) council meeting.

That framework says the award – which will officially be known as the Prince George Medal of Excellence and Good Citizenship – will be given to people for their exceptional contributions in areas like leadership, innovation, impact, courage, and generosity.

“The program will be managed by the Prince George Community Foundation, including nomination intake, adjudication, and coordination with the proposed recipients approved by Council,” a staff report said.

“The Community Foundation will market the program along with support from the City’s Communications Department.”

According to the staff report, all award recipients will be presented with a custom-designed medal with ribbon in the colours of the Prince George flag as well as a matching lapel pin.

The City will also donate $1,000 per recipient to the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society in honour of each recipient. A commemorative plaque will also be installed at that location as well as Prince George City Hall.

Award recipients will also be granted permanent civic honours with their photo, biography, and achievements posted to the city website.

“A recognition event will celebrate the recipients at a special Council meeting where they will receive the medal, lapel pin, and a certificate with the garden location, with a reception to follow,” the report added.

An initial start-up budget of up to $5,000 will be needed to design, procure and install assets related to this program, while an ongoing yearly budget of up to $10,000 will help cover the donation and other costs.

The Select Committee recommends that the initial funding come from Council’s Contingency fund while the ongoing budget be funded through property taxes.

The idea for a Citizen Recognition Program was put forward in November last year. It was approved by council after some spirited debate.

City Council is now being asked to approve the program framework, the nomination form and selection criteria, as well as the proposed budget. If they do, the program is expected to begin in January 2026, with an award presentation sometime mid-spring.
