PRINCE GEORGE — Ryder Shea stopped 67 shots over two games as the Alberni Valley Bulldogs completed the weekend sweep over the Prince George Spruce Kings at Kopar Memorial Arena.

The Bulldogs took Saturday’s (Nov. 8) game 4-1 and Friday’s game 4-2.

Bulldogs forward Kai Matthew scored two power play goal just 12 seconds apart in the first period Saturday to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Kazumo Sasaki brought the Spruce Kings back into the game with a power play marker of his own, but the Bulldogs added two more. Kye Benoche restored the two goal lead in the second period before an empty netter from Caden Tremblay in the third secured the win.

Ryder Shea was stellar for Alberni Valley as he stopped 30 of 31 shots Saturday. Marko Bilic stopped 21 of 24 shots for Prince George in a losing effort.

Shea also impressed on Friday night as he made 37 saves on 39 shots.

The Bulldogs took the lead on two occasions Friday through Teague McAllister, but the Spruce Kings bounced back on both occasions as Carter Hesselgrave and Spencer Masters found the back of the net.

Kai Matthew then scored what turned out to be the game winner late in the period, as he made it 3-2 Alberni Valley.

Samuel Léonard put the game to bed with the insurance goal early in the third period.

Ryder Green stopped 22 shots on Friday night to pick up the loss in the Prince George net.

The Spruce Kings remain in third place in the BCHL’s Coastal East Division and seventh in the Coastal Conference with a 7-8 record, good for 14 points from 15 games.

They’ll look to bounce back against the 1-14 Surrey Eagles this Friday (Nov. 14) and in Langley Saturday against the Rivermen.
