PRINCE GEORGE —Update: Prince George RCMP say the explosive device found in a home on the 1600-block of Eighth Avenue was successfully detonated by the Explosives Disposal Unit.

The explosive was located during the execution of a search warrant at the home. Police say that the investigation continues. The operation forced the evacuation of nearby homes.

Earlier: Prince George RCMP has evacuated several homes on the 1600-block of Eighth Avenue after an explosives device was located by police during the execution of a search warrant at a house in the area.

The Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) from the Lower Mainland has been advised of the situation and is en route to assist local police officers in disposing of the device.

“Police officers have left the residence and are on sight keeping the area secure until EDU can attend. Out of an abundance of caution for residents in that neighbourhood, investigators have evacuated the nearby houses,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

Residents can expect police to remain on scene until the explosive device has been safely dealt with.

The substantive investigation remains ongoing and will resume when the residence is deemed safe for police to re-enter.
