BARKERVILLE — A snowmobiler from Prince George was rescued near Barkerville early Sunday morning (Dec.7) by both Prince George and Quesnel search and rescue teams.

Dave Merritt, search manager with Prince George Search and Rescue, says the pair set out Saturday morning from the Prosser Pine area when one of the snowmobilers got lost in a creek drainage area. He was also separated from his friend and called for help.

“Because he had a radio it made it easier for us to try and pinpoint exactly where he was. We then talked him through on how to get his coordinates on his iPhone. So, by 11 or 12 o’clock at night we were able to more or less get his exact location,” says Merritt.

From there, Merritt says they sent out their snowmobile team along with three people in snowshoes who were able to find him hours later.

He says without radio contact, they likely would’ve have been able to reach him until the next day adding temperatures dipped to around minus 7 during the overnight hours.

“We always remind everyone, be prepared for the unexpected. Follow the AdventureSmart principles – take some gear with you, follow the three T’s – training, take the essentials, and just understand what you’re getting yourself into. Be prepared for things to go sideways.

“And call for help sooner. This group did call early. We got them off the mountain at 6:30 a.m. but it could have been a lot later. They did a lot of right things. Started a fire, stayed put, had radio communications and was able to use his iPhone to tell us where he was. That all helps us.”
