Prince George-Valemount MLA earns leadership role within Conservative caucus

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-Valemount Conservative MLA Rosalyn Bird feels her background in the military will help her to succeed in her new role as Conservative Party of BC caucus whip.

Bird spent over 20 years in the navy as a logistical officer and says her new role as whip complements that. Caucus whips are responsible for ensuring party discipline, attendance and that MLAs toe the party line.

“Interestingly I think my background is well suited for this position. Coming from a military background, coming from a logistics background. That’s a big piece of this job – to keep things moving, to keep people organized, making sure people are where they need to be on time. That the messaging is tight. That people know what their roles and responsibilities are and that they feel well supported.”

Bird feels there may be even more challenges as whip with a leadership race going on.

“That can have a direct impact on the relationships in caucus. Trying to keep that contained, trying to keep that maintained, and everybody sort of working together and not being influenced by external pressures.”

On Wednesday, Interim Leader of the Conservative Caucus Trevor Halford, set new critic and leadership responsibilities with the party.

Some MLAs kept their current roles, including Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Kiel Giddens – who remains the party’s Labour Critic and Prince George-North Cariboo MLA Sheldon Clare, who stays on as the critic for Environment, Parks, Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.
