PRINCE GEORGE – A sensory friendly Christmas event will be coming to Prince George this weekend. Autism BC and the Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN) are collaborating to host this event at the Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14.

“We’re just having a sensory friendly winter gathering for families with neurodivergent children or who may be neurodivergent themselves. They can come and get pictures with Santa, we’re going to do train rides, a lot of snacks, everyone’s going to get a little goody bag,” explained PAFN’s Office Manager Ashleen Massicotte.

“We wouldn’t have any kind of flashing lights. We’ll try to keep the volume lower, like no loud music, and just like a very understanding environment,” she continued.

The event is free to attend, but Massicotte asks you still register on the website if you are interested in attending, as it will allow staff to prepare an appropriate amount of goody bags. As for the event itself, Massicotte says she’s happy to bring this to the community, as it opens up holiday activities to people who may otherwise have challenges with other events.

“A traditional holiday event might not be the most inclusive for our kiddos. The expectations are, like if there’s a Santa’s meet and greet, they’d have to go see him right away kind of thing with your spot in line. But with here, they can take their time and wait until they’re feel comfortable, and everybody there understands and knows how autism and other divergences affect the kiddos,” she said.

Earlier this year a similar style event was held for Halloween, which was a big success, so Massicotte is excited to continue bringing events like this to the community.
