PRINCE GEORGE – As the cost of living continues to rise, an increasing number of seniors in Prince George are seeking additional support this holiday season. In response, the Prince George Council of Seniors is stepping up its annual Christmas hamper program, preparing hundreds of food hampers for those who need them the most.

This year, the Prince George Council of Seniors has put together 200 Christmas hampers, an increase from the 168 prepared last year. With grocery prices continuing to rise, many seniors on fixed incomes are feeling the pinch, making these hampers even more crucial.

“Grocery costs are going up. And so that’s why we are doing more hampers. And we are happy to do more hampers.”

Executive Director, Prince George Council of Seniors

Hamper packing began on December 15, thanks to a generous donation of space from Shoppers Food Wholesale. Over four busy days, volunteers dedicated their time and effort to preparing the hampers, with most scheduled for delivery on December 18 and the rest going to senior homes on December 19. The Council of Seniors anticipates that demand for Christmas hampers will continue to rise as prices climb.

“ From the senior resource center, we supported about 15,617 seniors in one year, which has been the highest number we have ever had.”

The program provides support for seniors aged 65 and over who are experiencing financial difficulties, particularly given rising food prices.

For many seniors, these food hampers represent more than just a meal; they serve as a heartfelt reminder that their community cares and hasn’t forgotten about them.
