PRINCE GEORGE – As the holiday season draws more people into the outdoors, Prince George Search and Rescue is reminding adventurers to prepare carefully and call for help early if they get into trouble.

Dave Merritt of Prince George Search and Rescue says winter conditions can sometimes slow response times, noting that “it can take time for response teams to reach you, especially with weather and reduced daylight.” He adds that early calls improve outcomes, saying, “Calling for help early allows us to respond more effectively and safely.”

Search and Rescue crews have already responded to five calls this winter, with shorter daylight hours and nighttime ground rescues often requiring snowmobiles.

Merritt also reminds the public that “calling for help is free in British Columbia,” and encourages people not to hesitate to dial 911 when needed.

BC Adventure Smart is also emphasizing education and preparation to reduce risk in the backcountry. Sandra Riches with BC Adventure Smart says outdoor safety comes down to “trip planning, training, and taking the essentials.” She explains that leaving trip details with a trusted contact can significantly help rescuers if something goes wrong.

Riches stresses the importance of skills and education, saying, “You need to be trained, capable, and qualified for the activity you’re choosing, especially in winter.”

She also encourages people to pack season-appropriate gear, noting that “having the right essentials can make a life-saving difference.”

Together, Search and Rescue and Adventure Smart say proper planning, training, and early calls for help allow people to enjoy Northern B.C.’s outdoors more safely.
