Prince George – With nothing but snow and sub zero temperatures in the forecast holiday travel can turn into a holiday nightmare with unsafe roads. With December being statically the most dangerous month for drivers it’s important to respect the roads and conditions.

“This week we’ve doubled our call volume. We’re averaging at 130 calls a day and we’ve brought in extra drivers on days off to come help us to drop the call volume trying to eliminate people’s wait times.” said Ron’s Towing driver Chris Cherry.

With wait times for service potentially being hours long it is important to plan your trip and check the weather before hitting the road as snowy and icy conditions are in high gear all across Northern B.C.

“We’ve been far as Pine Pass, Fort St. James, Burns Lake and Quesnel. We’re all over the place and right now you’re looking at sometimes couple hours wait time for service, but we’re trying to cut that down.” said Cherry.

Underestimating winter conditions is a mistake seen too often and following a couple tips could make the difference between a safe trip or needing a tow.

“It’s really crucial to respect the weather this time of year, and that the conditions can change without notice. Making sure you have the proper tires, that’s where it starts. Then once you’re behind the wheel and driving to the conditions, that means managing your speed and understanding that speed limits are set for ideal conditions only. Another thing to note is when the weather gets tough and roads get slick perhaps the speed limit might not be the safest speed to travel. Sometimes the safest decision we can make is to not drive at all ” said ICBC spokesperson Greg Harper.

ICBC adds that before heading out check out DriveBC.ca to check road conditions and make sure to pack an emergency kit.
