Earlier: The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) has issued an Evacuation Alert for the Dohler Flats Area near Smithers because of growing concerns about ice dams on the Bulkley River.

The alert took effect at 4:00 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 28) evening and it applies to all lands, properties and houses north of Dohler Road, as well as areas south of Dohler Road that are east of Rosenthal Subdivision Road.

The RDBN says the alert is precautionary as there is a concern that the ice jams could lead to flooding, which, should river conditions worsen.

“An Evacuation Alert has been issued to prepare you to evacuate your premises, or property should it be found necessary,” the alert said. “Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to evacuation, however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.”

“In the event of an Evacuation Order, a Reception Centre will be opened if required, and evacuation routes specified.”
