PRINCE GEORGE — UPDATE with attached video: Superintendent Warren Brown comments. Meanwhile, School District 57 has given Kelly Road Secondary and Heather Park Elementary the all clear and police say an adult male in mental distress was apprehended by police at a home on Handlen Road at 1:20 p.m. Police say firearms were believed to be involved.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Earlier: Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass has provided more details into today’s police incident on the Hart.

He tells CKPG Today that an individual near the school is threatening to harm him or herself and as result police have had to take precautions.

Douglass says those precautions include a heavy police presence and the arrival of the Emergency Response Team.

Supt. Warren Brown believes that Kelly Road Secondary School students are slowly being evacuated and asked to muster at Heather Park Elementary.

Police say no students have been injured. We’ll update this story as soon as more information becomes available.

Earlier: A police incident was responsible for a lockdown at Kelly Road Secondary this afternoon.

Prince George School District Superintendent Marilyn Marquis-Forster says the school was placed on lockdown on the advice of the Prince George RCMP who are currently responding to an incident occurring in the same neighbourhood.

She says the lockdown occurred just before noon but notes that’s been downgraded to a “hold and secure” on the advice of police. That protocol stipulates bringing everyone into the school while ensuring the exterior doors and windows of the school are secured.

It also means no one may enter or exit the school while normal activities typically continue within the school.

During a lockdown, all interior doors are secured and lights are switched off and school activities are halted.

As a precautionary measure, Marquis-Forster says nearby Heather Park Elementary School has been placed on a “Shelter in Place,” whereby all students are brought in the school and the windows and blinds are closed. Typically normal activities continue under this protocol.

She adds police tell her they have control of the situation and that measures have been taken to protect students.

Police have yet to release any information on today’s events.
