Avalanche claims a life near Tumbler Ridge
TUMBLER RIDGE — One person is dead following an avalanche 35 kilometres southwest of Tumbler Ridge.
Avalanche Canada says it happened on December 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the Bullmoose riding area.
“Three snowmobilers were riding in the Bullmoose area near Tumbler Ridge when one person was caught and buried in an avalanche. The avalanche was remotely triggered from the base of the slope. The avalanche measured approximately 300 m wide by 240 m long, with a crown between 75 cm and 2 m thick. The area was heavily wind-affected,” says an incident report.
“The avalanche is believed to have run on a rain crust from mid-December, buried approximately 75 cm below the surface. The subject was fully buried and did not survive, despite prompt companion rescue.”
