PRINCE GEORGE — (UPDATE 2:00 p.m.): No injuries have been reported, but the City of Prince George says people in the Heritage area who were displaced by yesterday’s (March 14) gas leak will be able to return home this evening.

The city told CKPG Today that repair work is expected to be done by 6:00 p.m., and that residents of 101–109 at 448 Tabor Boulevard will be allowed back once work has wrapped up. Those residents were allowed back this morning to gather some belongings, but couldn’t stay as the heat was out.

“Emergency Support Services will continue to support affected residents until they are able to return to their homes,” the city said, noting impacted residents can call 250-614-7838 to arrange accommodation.

Prince George Fire Rescue responded to a house in the 300 block of Carrier Place around 2:11 p.m. Saturday (March 14) following reports about the smell of gas.

“Upon arrival, crews detected high levels of natural gas in and around the home,” the city statement said. “Further investigation determined that the hazardous gas readings extended beyond the residence in question.”

Once those readings were verified by FortisBC, the city says BC Hydro cut off power to the area to minimize the risk of ignition. A number of residents were also ordered to evacuate as a precaution though many were allowed to return home a couple of hours later.

“We appreciate the swift actions of residents in the evacuation area who responded immediately to the alert,” Prince George Fire Chief Bryan Burleigh said, in the statement. “We know these alerts can create fear and confusion, and situations like this can evolve rapidly.”

“Safety is always our number one priority, which is why it was necessary to evacuate the area.”

It’s still not clear what caused the gas leak, which is still being investigated by FortisBC. The utility also has crews on site working on repairs.

“Yesterday also showcased top-level teamwork from our fire department and emergency management teams, as well as the RCMP, FortisBC, and BC Hydro,” Burleigh added. “Everyone acted with the utmost professionalism and urgency in responding to this situation.”
