PRINCE GEORGE – A snowmobiling trip in the Omineca Mountains of northern British Columbia ended in tragedy on Tuesday when an avalanche buried one rider under almost two metres of snow.

The avalanche happened around 5 p.m. near Johanson Lake, about 235 kilometres northwest of Mackenzie.

Authorities say two snowmobilers accidentally set off a slab avalanche. One rider stayed on the surface, but the other was buried under about 1.8 metres of snow.

The surviving rider used a satellite messenger to call for help from a nearby snowmobile camp. Another group arrived at the scene about 25 minutes after the avalanche.

Rescuers found and dug out the buried rider, but could not save them. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The avalanche was rated size 2.5, which means it was large enough to bury, injure, or kill a person.

Avalanche Canada is urging backcountry travellers to stay cautious as spring conditions continue. They warn that unstable snowpack can still be dangerous well into the season. Officials recommend always carrying avalanche rescue equipment, such as a transceiver, probe, and shovel, when heading into the backcountry.
