Four arrested after crash on Highway 16

MCBRIDE – Four people were arrested after police investigated a fuel theft that ended in a crash near Goat River Pit Road and Highway 16 on July 4.

McBride RCMP said they got a report around 5:15 p.m. that someone had stolen fuel and batteries from heavy equipment on a rural property.

Soon after, police learned about a car crash near Goat River Pit Road and Highway 16. Investigators found that a witness had followed the suspects’ vehicle to get more information, and when the suspects left Goat River Pit Road, their vehicle hit the witness’s car.

The suspects’ vehicle then lost control and went into a ditch.

RCMP said all four people in the vehicle ran away after the crash. Officers, along with Police Dog Services and the Emergency Response Team, searched the area and found all four suspects. Three were found in a nearby wooded area soon after, and a police dog later found the fourth.

Two people were treated for injuries sustained in the incident, including those from the crash. closed while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene. The highway has since reopened.

All four suspects were arrested and later released while the investigation continues.

RCMP said the investigation into the theft and crash is still ongoing. Anyone with information should contact the McBride RCMP detachment.
