Nearly $1 million in damage after stolen excavator used in incident involving arson
PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George RCMP is investigating a major incident that caused nearly $1 million in damages to a local company after a stolen excavator was allegedly used to destroy equipment at a nearby mine site before being set ablaze.
Police say the incident came to light on July 5, 2026, shortly after 10 a.m., when frontline officers responded to reports of an excavator on fire in a heavily wooded area near Chief Lake Road.
The Chief Lake Volunteer Fire Department quickly attended the scene and successfully prevented the fire from spreading into the surrounding forest. During the investigation, officers determined the excavator had been stolen from a nearby mine site. Investigators believe the machine was subsequently used to damage a rock truck at the site before being abandoned and set on fire.
RCMP conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate any suspects.
