Feds commit to helping Northwood employees
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Canfor Corporation has announced the permanent closure of its Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, a decision that will eliminate approximately 300 jobs and reduce the company’s annual pulp production by about 300,000 tonnes.
The closure marks another significant setback for British Columbia’s forest sector and for Prince George, a community with deep roots in forestry and resource development. Canfor said the decision comes after years of mounting challenges in the global pulp and paper industry and ongoing difficulties securing fibre supplies.
In a statement, the company cited a structural shift in global pulp markets, increased international production capacity, and sustained financial losses as key reasons behind the closure.
