5-1 loss splits Cougars’ home opening double header

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars split their weekend home opening double header following a 5-1 defeat to the Penticton Vees on Saturday night (Sept. 19) at the CN Centre.

The Vees opened the scoreboard 3:49 into the first period with a power play goal from Gavin Katz, scoring the only point of the first frame.

In the second period, the Vees pulled ahead with a flurry of three unanswered goals.

Tyler Deakos scored 50 seconds into the period, followed by a point from Callum Stone four minutes later, finishing off with a third goal from Nate Pederson with just nine seconds left in the period.

The Cougars faced a tough battle heading into the third period with the Vees taking a 4-0 lead into the final frame.

Midway through the period, centre Dmitri Yakutsenak shored the first and lone goal for the Cougars during a power play with assists from Townes Kozicky and Lee Shurgot.

Vees’ left winger Nate Pederson closed out the game with a final goal at the 17:23 mark, to clinch the 5-1 victory.

Both teams played an aggressive game, with the Vees taking 33 shots on net and the Cougars taking 27 shots.

Next weekend, the Cougars will head to Seattle on Friday (Sept. 25) and Vancouver on Saturday (Sept. 26) to take on the Thunderbirds and the Giants.
