PRINCE GEORGE – Thanks to a new partnership between UNBC and the BC Oil and Gas Commission, 30 Indigenous students will be enrolling in one of two programs that provide natural resource training.

“We are excited to offer these opportunities in partnership with UNBC,” says the Commission’s Executive Director of Strategic Relations, Dean Zimmer. “It is important to support Indigenous education efforts in natural resource management to ensure a strong presence throughout the lifecycle of natural resource-based projects, including oil and gas.”

The students will be able to choose either Land Reclamation or Environmental Monitoring programs through UNBC Continuing Studies. The natural resource training will allow the students to work in their communities and in natural resource management combined.

The Commission is providing $125,000 and the BC Oil and Gas Research Innovation Society is giving $25,000.

Students won’t have to worry about tuition, accommodation or food costs, because that will all be covered by the funding.

Classes will begin in May for students.

“Through the Northern Leadership Campaign, UNBC is enhancing the quality of academic programming we provide to Indigenous students, responding to critical skills shortages, and inspiring next generation leaders through innovative, supportive and engaging experimental learning opportunities that have a lasting impact,” says UNBC President Dr. Daniel Weeks.

The program is also meant to help advance Indigenous involvement on how resource projects are regulated and monitored.
