PRINCE GEORGE – It was all smiles outside the Northern Medical Program at UNBC today, as more than 30 newly-minted doctors received their white lab coats and shingles today. It’s graduation day.

The Northern Medical Program has graduated more than 100 doctors over the decade-plus life of the Program, the majority of whom stay and practice in the North and rural BC communities.

“I was asked what success would look like in five years time for the Northern Medical Program and I said, if I could walk into any community in Northern BC and meet a physician that we had graduated, that would be success,” explains Dr. Paul Winwood, the Vice President of the Northern Medical Program. “But, you know, as I think about it, we’re almost there and that’s just amazing.”

The Class of 2018 includes 14 graduates from Northern BC, 15 will be entering family practice residency programs in rural and small centres in BC. In addition, two graduates will be entering psychiatry residency in Prince George. The remaining students have matched to a wide range of specialities including three in Obstetrics and Gynecology, four in Internal Medicine, Hematological Pathology, Medical Microbiology, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Urology and Pediatrics.
