Pathway in Front of College Demolished

PRINCE GEORGE – Construction is underway on a concrete path in front of the College of New Caledonia in the wake of the death of a student crossing Highway 97.  Its been two weeks since international student Sankeep Kaur crossed the highway off the path in front of the library building at CNC.  She was struck and killed by an impaired driver.  The path used to lead to a bus stop which is no longer in service, and crews are now ripping up the concrete and putting in grass.

Since Kaur’s death there have been a number of meetings between the school,  the Ministry of Transportation, and local politicians to discuss how safety can be improved at the busy intersection with a college and high school nearby.  Internal changes at the college are in the works as well, with a review of all crosswalks underway as well as new information sessions for International students about Canadian traffic rules.

Student Union representative Harman Dandiwal says he’s pleased to see such quick action,  but would also like a survey to go out to poll the student body as to whether an overpass or tunnel should be installed as a way to cross the busy highway.

A memorial still stands at the main doors of the school for Kaur,  an exchange student from India who had been a student at CNC for just two months.
