PRINCE GEORGE – There is good news and bad news on the wildfire front.  The good news is that crews are making headway against some of the largest fires in our region.  The bad news is a hot dry forecast will make things difficult.

The Shovel Lake fire northwest of Fraser Lake is now at 15 percent containment.  More than 100 firefighters and support crew are working with 7 helicopters and 49 pieces of heavy equipment to bring the fire under control.  The BC Wildfire Service says crews are working to build fire guards around the fire to prevent it from growing.  The fire has been measured at 5,100 hectares.  The fire continues to have an evacuation alert and an area restriction order attached to it.

To the southwest of Prince George, the Chutanli Lake fire is at 870 hectares.  It’s forced the closure of the Kluskus Forest Service road from the 70km mark to the 113km mark.  A detour has been established by using the Red Road.  An evacuation alert remains in place for a pair of properties.  Ther are 22 firefighters, 2 helicopters, and 5 pieces of heavy equipment assigned to the fire.

The two fires are producing heavy smoke and will be affecting air quality in the city for the next two days according to Firesmoke.ca.  The smoky skies air quality bulletin remains in place for much of the region.
