Wildfire Crews Trying To Hold Back Fires

PRINCE GEORGE – BC Wildfire officials are reporting some success in the Shovel Lake forest fire northwest of Fraser Lake.  Although the fire jumped containment lines yesterday, the flames were caught and stomped out quickly.  Crews have seen the fire grow to 6,150 hectares but say they’ve been successful in keeping the fire within the Shovel Lake drainage basin.  Over 110 firefighters and support staff are fighting the fire along with 7 helicopters and 49 pieces of heavy equipment.

Meantime the Chutanli Lake fire southwest of Prince George is creating headaches for fire fighters.  A small portion of the fire jumped a guard and resulted in the small growth of the fire Monday.  It’s now 900 hectares.  Officials have issued an evacuation alert for two homes and have closed a portion of the Kluskus Forest service road during daytime hours.   15 firefighters, 2 helicopters and  5 pieces of heavy equipment are dedicated to the fire.

Wildfire crews will have their work cut out for them over the next several days.  The weather forecast is calling for high temperatures to be 7 to 10 degrees above average, which supports aggressive fire behaviour.

The bulk of new serious fires in the north were sparked late last week in the northwest.  The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako has 4 current evacuation orders and 4 more evacuation alerts in place to deal with the blazes.  However, the orders and alerts do not affect any major centres.
