27 Structures Destroyed By Wildfires In Telegraph Creek Area
DEASE LAKE – An evacuation order remains in place for the community of Telegraph Creek by the Kitimat Stikine Regional District, due to the burning of the Alkali Lake fire. The order also includes the area from Yehinko Creek to Caribou Meadows. The aggressive blaze now burns at about 7,800 hectares.
Tahlten First Nation Chief Rick McLean told a community meeting in Dease Lake that 27 structures are burning in the area, representing 30 to 45 percent of the community. The BC Wildfire Service says crews are confirming the locations of the 27 structures.
On scene, there are 78 firefighters, nine helicopters and 15 pieces of heavy equipment. Highway 51 has also been closed so crews can protect a wooden bridge that’s helping them get to and from the frontlines.
The BC Wildfire Service says that Tuesday’s priority for crews is to protect structures and other infrastructure in the Telegraph Creek area. There is a significant amount of smoke in the area due to the fire. Smoke information can be found online.
