Forest Minister With A Fire Update

PRINCE GEORGE – Approximately 500 fires are still burning across BC but the fires of note have come down to roughly 18. Forest Minister, Doug Donaldson stopped by Prince George on the weekend to give an update on the fires throughout the Province.

“The fires across the Northwest Centre and Prince Geroge Centre are looking better, we’ve had a bit of rain. Rain doesn’t put fires out, it’s the crews on the ground that actually put the fires out but rain helps because it allows them to take a more aggressive attack on fires doing back burning for instance, really doing a direct attack on the fires.”

Fires of concern like the Shovel Lake wildfire are more contained at this point and although lightning didn’t cause of the Shovel Lake fire, what started it is still under investigation. The Verdun Fire is still a concern as the Burns Lake area did not receive much precipitation but there are currently no new fires in the Prince George Fire Centre.

Donaldson says this is a big fire season in terms of the number of hectares burnt. It’s the largest number the province has seen on record.

“The impact economically hasn’t been as big as in some of the other fires for instance last year and in 2003 in the Okanagan. But it’s a big fire season and it’s just an amazing job, I want to commend the BC Wildfire service staff, contractors and volunteers because their number one priority is keeping people safe and keeping themselves safe and we haven’t lost one life directly as a result of the fires in this season or in last season. I think that is a tremendous tribute to the success of what our crews have been doing out there in the bush.”

After his stop in Prince George, Donaldson was off to Burns Lake to speak with the fire crew and remind them how well they are doing in this tiring time.
