PRINCE GEORGE – Located on the College of New Caledonia campus is the new heavy mechanical trades facility in Prince George. The facility can accommodate 251 full-time students and up to 48 new spots for the heavy-duty equipment technician, truck and transport mechanics program. Funding for the 18.5 million dollar facility came from the province, federal government and the college itself. Construction began early last year and is now complete.

The 2018 Labour Market Outlook forecasts approximately 6 thousand job openings for trades occupations in northern British Columbia over the next 10 years. That includes 16 hundred in the Cariboo region. This new facility will give students the training needed to get those jobs straight out of school.

Heavy mechanical trades students inspect, service and repair commercial trucks, buses, cranes and other heavy equipment. Trades student, Ryan Bachand explains what he’s most excited for when learning in the new facility.

“Probably the more room, not having to wait for my turn (with the equipment) and actually be able to get a lot more hands-on experience.”
