Art Exhibit Opens At UNBC
PRINCE GEORGE – In May, 10 students from UNBC and other universities across Canada took part in a trip to Guatemala to study social justice issues of culture, rights and power. Following the trip, the university is holding an art exhibit presenting personal reflections and information from the trip.
The Social Justice Experiential Art Exhibit opens on Thursday and will feature topics like how Canadian mining companies impact Guatemalan communities, the Guatemalan genocide of the 1980s, and a play about Adolfo Ich, a community leader and human rights activist who was murdered in 2009 during a protest involving a mine in El Estor, Guatemala.
“I think what people will see are the faces of resistance to this kind of imposed development model, it’s really inspiring. So it’s not all terrible crimes and violations, but ways that people are moving forward,” says Doctor Catherine Nolin, Chair of UNBC’s geography department and one of the trip organizers.
The exhibit opens Thursday night at 7:30.
