Environmental sustainability the focus of UNBC’s Green Day
PRINCE GEORGE — UNBC held its Green Day, promoting sustainability at not only the school but community as well. Electric cars, winter camps, and meditation caves were set up, along with various booths to give students an idea of how to be more green. Environmental sustainability was the theme of UNBC’s Green Day.
It’s something near and dear to the school, with many committees and clubs dedicated to making UNBC greener and more sustainable. Despite the willingness to be involved in these types of programs, brain drain is still relevant at the school and northern BC, as students, in particular, will come for a degree or diploma and then leave.
“By showing that sustainability, which is something actually very dear to our students in Prince George, is a big focus in town and in the north too, I think it shows opportunity for people stay in the north,” said Green day Coordinator, Jennifer Baddeley.
One of the programs, headed by the PG Public Interest Research Group (PG PIRG), is the newly launched “The Good Store”. The student-run store increases accessibility for students to healthy and affordable food while also tackling plastic waste. People can use their own, or donated, jars and fill them with food so they can re-use packaging instead of throwing out plastics.
