Urban composting in Prince George
PRINCE GEORGE- Earlier this week, Mayor Lyn Hall hosted 30 mayors from around the province. They talked about a number of issues and commonalities between each community. One item Prince George doesn’t share with a handful of other BC municipalities is a city-wide food composting program. Langley mayor, Val van den Broek says her community program works so well that her garbage can never gets full, instead, she uses her recycling bins. REAPS executive director, Terri McClymont, says it’s important to compost as food that rots in the landfill creates methane. That’s a greenhouse gas that she says is bad for the environment. The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has yard and garden composting at its transfer stations and says food waste is on the radar, but there are still years to go before that becomes a reality. Until then there are ways to compost at home, even if you don’t have access to a regular back yard composter. McClymont says there are a number of alternatives that can be done indoors. She adds there will be free composting workshops next month for anyone interested in reducing the amount of garbage they send to the landfill.
