Politics in BC stranger than usual – maybe it’s time for a Ministry of Northern Affairs

April 9, 2019 - 8:33am

Politics are always strange in BC but maybe stranger now than usual. John Horgan and the NDP have introduced a bill to reduce taxation for LNG companies in order to expedite this industry. LNG is almost worse for our environment than the mining of the tarsands. LNG Involves fracking in the Peace country, which consumes enormous amounts of water and leads to local earthquakes. The liquefaction process consumes huge amounts of energy then the product is shipped across the ocean to Asia, again consuming vast amounts of fossil fuels.

Provincial budget was silent on Northern Health and advanced education

March 5, 2019 - 10:28am Updated: March 6, 2019 - 4:37pm

Northern Health is responsible for the provision of Health Care for two-thirds of the land mass of British Columbia. Our health services are woefully inadequate compared to the rest of the Province. The North provides the workers and natural resources which make significant economic contributions that fund provincial health and education. In return, we deserve equitable access to services.

Federal Election

January 30, 2019 - 11:32am

The referendum on proportional representation failed in BC. Only 13% of voters in Peace River voted in favour of Proportional Representation, the lowest % in the Province, closely followed by Nechako Lakes.. Is this because the area is strongly Conservative? The provincial Liberals, a coalition of right-wing voters, came out strongly against proportional representation. Both Prince George Ridings supported First Past the Post by 71%. One of the main reasons given for voting the referendum down, was that voters found the choices too confusing.

Will British Columbia be the Leader?

December 4, 2018 - 9:53am

BC has this wonderful opportunity to lead Canada into the 21st century. Once BC has adopted Proportional Representation; Quebec, New Brunswick and PEI will follow suit and hopefully Canada too. The Proportional Representation campaign in BC is drawing to a close. In another week, we should know if the scare tactics and negative advertising worked for the No side so that we are stuck with the status quo and nothing will have changed.

Democratic Reform

November 6, 2018 - 11:06am

Some people are still unaware that there is a referendum underway. However, this is the critical time to bring back Democracy to BC and indeed to Canada. We have the chance to exercise our vote and determine whether we want to stay with the status quo or join most other Democracies by moving to a system of Proportional Representation. So many people complain about how our Government is run and how the majority of our opinions and priorities are not fairly represented in our current system of Government. This is our chance to change things and make a difference for future generations.
