Adopt a Caribou

PRINCE GEORGE – For many years programs have been in place to stop the decline of the BC’s Mountain Caribou. Despite the best efforts of government programs, the caribou population continue to fall. The Chase caribou herd located along the west side of Williston Lake is part of a unique research program where groups can adopt an animal and be updated on its progress. The Adopt a Caribou program goal is to increase engagement and education. Each group will receive regular updates on the Mountain Caribou they’ve adopted and the entire Caribou project.  According to biologist Krista Sittler, there were about 470 animals in the Chase Caribou herd in 2009, since then the population has dropped to about 300. One of the first adopters of a caribou was the Spruce City Wildlife Association with funds they raised through their annual Wild Game Banquet.
