BC Hydro imports power as a cost-saving measure

PRINCE GEORGE – Our thirst for electricity and the recent cold temperatures set a new record for the highest peak hourly demand last week.

When the demand for domestic power is low, BC Hydro imports cheap power from Alberta and the United States.

When importing it, it gives hydro facilities a chance to fill its reservoirs.

When the demand is high BC Hydro has the infrastructure in place to meet the needs of the province and sell the extra power back to those living in other neighbouring borders at a higher rate.
