PRINCE GEORGE — It’s a sure sign of spring.

The city of Prince George has released the details of its road and sidewalk rehabilitation plan for this year.

It includes the resurfacing of about 48 lane kilometres of road, which the city says is about enough asphalt to pave one lane of road between Shas ti Kelly Road in the Hart and College Heights Secondary two-and-a-half times. One of the biggest projects will be the repaving of the southbound lane of Ospika Boulevard all the way to Tyner Boulevard.

The city is also rehabilitating about two kilometres of concrete sidewalk and 1.1 kilometres of asphalt sidewalk and installing 1.35 kilometres of new concrete sidewalk.

In total, there are 38 road-resurfacing projects, and 12 sidewalk projects this construction season.

In January, city council reduced the proposed roads budget from $5.95 million to $5.5 million. Council also approved an increase in the budget for sidewalk rehabilitation and installation to $1.25 million, up from $700,000 in 2021.

The city says preparatory work for road line painting is starting in the next few weeks and expected to be completed by the end of June. Road rehabilitation, sweeping operations, and line painting are all dependent upon weather conditions.

Major paving operations are expected to begin in mid-May.
