Feedback Wanted On Sexual Violence Policies At BC Universities
PRINCE GEORGE- The BC government introduced the Sexual Violence and Misconduct Act in 2016 that requires each public post-secondary school in BC create a policy dealing with sexual misconduct. Now, the government wants to hear how those policies are working.
UNBC published its policy in May 2017. Its main goals are prevention, quick response to complaints, and support. “Anybody who receives a disclosure needs to know what to do to act on it, and students need to know that they can go to anybody and feel safe and have their confidentiality respected,” said Associate Vice President of People, Organizational Design and Risk, Barb Daigle. Consent and disclosure are taught on campus through booths, activities, and signage.
“Any feedback loop is a great opportunity for us, if we’ve missed something and students haven’t been comfortable to share that, we want to hear it,” added Daigle, “for government to continue to be invested in this is great.”
The provincial government is taking feedback from students, staff, and faculty until January 29th. You can view UNBC’s policy on its website, and give your feedback to the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills, and Training.
