School District 57 Scraps Letter Grades Throughout School Year
About 250 families will be getting a different kind of report card this month. Prince George Secondary is part of a pilot program that will remove percentages from report cards for grade 7 and 8 students. The Ministry of Education implemented the change last year for kindergarten to grade 9, but School District 57 only applied it up until grade 7. It will be implemented throughout every grade within the next two years.
The goal is to improve communication between parents, teachers, and students. It takes away letter grades throughout the school year, and replaces it with performance based discussion. Parents will get regular updates on how their child is doing and areas they need to improve on. “One of the things we know about good assessment is that it’s a journey,” said principal, Sherry Thibault,”it’s ongoing feedback and we want parents as partners. When you give students a percent or letter grade usually the learning stops, they go I’m done… on to the next task.”
Parents are able to ask for the percentage at any time, but it won’t appear on report cards until the end of the school year.
