The local branch of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Project is hosting a fashion show on Thursday to raise money for grandmothers thousands of kilometres away.

“The funds go through the Stephen Lewis Foundation, but they go to the grassroots organizations in Africa that are helping the grandmothers,” says one of the organizers, Maggee Spice, who became involved when she herself became a grandmother.

“It just overwhelms you when you when you become a grandmother; so wonderful, delightful! But then you think, ‘What if I lost my children and I had to raise my grandchildren?’ That connection came together.”

The program was created a decade ago by the Foundation to help those who children were killed by the AIDS pandemic, leaving grandmothers to raise their grandchildren with no outside supports for things like foods, medications and education.
