February A Record Breaker For Snow
PRINCE GEORGE – For most of us, the fact February was the snowiest on record comes as no surprise.
According to Environment Canada’s records, the city saw nearly 87 centimetres of snow. That’s about three feet. And nearly two-thirds of that, or 67 centimetres, fell in a single week.
In total, more than 13-thousand truckloads of snow were hauled to snow dumps around town.
Still, the snowpack levels are mixed. In the Nechako, the levels are below normal, while they are above normal in West Upper Fraser.
“We’re on track for having the expected amount of water coming down our creeks and rivers. We’ll replenish our soil moisture, which is good considering the fire situation we had last summer,” says Stephen Dery, Hydrologist with UNBC.
What would be the worst case scenario at this point would be either a significant amount of snow or rapid warming, which would bring the snow melt into the rivers quickly, resulting in flooding.
