PRINCE GEORGE – Registration was supposed to begin in March, but after over 30 years,  the YMCA has decided to cancel it’s annual Road Race.  A statement on the Y’s website says “after great deliberation that due to increased costs and falling race participation that our efforts for the community be better served in supporting and growing our community-wide Healthy Kids Day.”

Healthy Kids Day is a free event open to everyone,  hosted by YMCA’s across North America on the same day.

The news may leave some local runners disappointed but the Prince George Road Runners have a full schedule this road racing season, including this weekend’s Heights Fiver kick off race in College Heights.  Spokesperson Amber Storey says there has actually been an increase in membership through the club and a good number of racers showing up to events.

The Y has received some feedback on the decision, mostly disappointment from runners,  but the organization continues to offer clinics and courses for those looking to hit the ground running.
