Health Minister Commits To Improved Surgeries

PRINCE GEORGE – Health Minister Adrian Dix made a swing through Prince George today, with a stop at University Hospital of Northern BC to announce funding to increase the number of hip and knee replacements by 12% and MRI’s by 70%.

“These are multi-year plans to systematically reduce hip and knee wait times, dental surgery wait times and MRI wait times in the north and everywhere in BC.”

But the Minister fielded questions from hospital staff about bed capacity and a new surgical tower, which has been on the Northern Medical Society’s wish list for a long time, as evidenced during the Bob Ewert Memorial dinner and the Kelly Report last Saturday. Not a surprise to the Minister.

“But if you’re asking me whether I think that the operating rooms in Prince George are up to modern standards, the answer’s no. And that’s been true for a long time.”

It’s for that reason the Northern Medical Society feels a 12% increase in hip and knee replacement surgeries are ambitious.

“I don’t think it’s possible. I think it’s unlikely that it’s been thought through properly,” says Dr. Bill Simpson with the Northern Medical Society. “Our operating rooms are desperately in need of renovations. You can’t just suddenly say we’re going to work more. If you keep on pushing volume through the operating rooms, something has to give. And the first that gives in that situation is usually safety.

A concept plan has been with the Ministry for some time, but Minister Dix says it was not in his hands before the 2018-2019 budget discussions took place.

“I haven’t stopped working on it just because of that, we haven’t stopped working at it. we’re going to make improvements right now to the concept plan. I’ve directed my Deputy Minister of Health Stephen Brown to be working with Northern Health on this file to make that this is given priority.”

However, he says he also has concept plans for hospital improvements from Williams Lake, Quesnel, Fort St John, Dawson Creek and so on.
