PRINCE GEORGE – In the Fraser-Fort George region, two work-related death claims were accepted by WorkSafeBC in 2017. The annual day of mourning was held at the Worker’s Memorial Statue today. The day remembers B.C. workers killed on the job.

The ceremony also highlighted violence and harassment prevention on the job.

“It’s a good opportunity to reinforce those responsibilities, those rules of employers, the rights of workers, so we have a better chance at preventing these types of tragedies,” says Barry Nakahara, PG Manager for Prevention Field Services.

Bagpipes played and a moment of silence was held. In 2017, WorkSafeBC accepted 158 work-related death claims in B.C. 87 of those were caused primarily by exposure to asbestos decades ago, and 71 resulted from traumatic injuries.
