Price At The Pump Could Slow Down Tourist Traffic

PRINCE GEORGE – With gas prices rising, the price to fill up could cause this year’s tourism traffic to slow down.

Anja Paetzold and Ieke Bribrenkmaware are visiting PG from Germany. They are currently in the middle of their 14-day tour through Alberta and BC. They hit the road expecting to experience Canada’s wildlife, something they did not expect was the growing cost of fueling up.

“The price is pretty the same like in Germany, so we expected a little bit more cheaper,” says Anja Paetzold, tourist.

Even if the price to fuel up does not stop people from hitting the road, it may lead them to spend less money elsewhere along the way: “They’re gonna buy less souvenirs, they’re gonna eat in the RV more often,” Erica Hummel, Tourism Prince George. Those money saving tactics are a way for travellers to keep their wheels moving, but it’s a hit for local business owners.

Fortunately, the price of gas hasn’t been a deal breaker for Paetzold and Bribrenkmaware. They saved for months to visit the Great White North and feel it has been well worth it.

“We wanted to see some wildlife, bears, we’ve already seen seven today on the road,” says Anja Paetzold, tourist.

Although they’ve had their fill of wildlife, their gas guzzling RV has also needed filling. With increased amounts of tire traffic flowing through our city, the Summer months will show if the price of the pump will tip travellers in another direction.
