Mother Nature Wreaks Havoc, More In Store

PRINCE GEORGE- It seems Mother Nature has more in store for the city this evening, after last night’s massive thunderstorm that caused localized flooding and power outages. Environment Canada says weather conditions in the city are the perfect ingredients for a second storm. “We had that extreme heat over the last few days and now cooler and moister air has moved in a lot that really destabilizes the situation,” says meteorologist Doug Lundquist. He reminds the public to stay indoors during a storm, clear storm drains and culverts, and tie down any items that may blow away in the wind.

However, the biggest threat tonight is expected to be from lightning and the potential to spark wildfires. The BC Wildfire Service says at least 98 new blazes broke out yesterday, most of them due to lightning, with at least three dozen spot fires scattered across the Prince George and Northwest fire centres. “By late last night we had picked up to 42 fires across the Prince George Fire Centre, the majority are in the Fort St. James and Vanderhoof fire zone and there are a few small fires south of Prince George,” says spokesperson, Amanda Reynolds, “even one human-caused fire is one too many right now, we really need people to be careful with open burning.”
