Prince George Part of Pilot Program
PRINCE GEORGE – It is just under a year ago that Prince George became “home” to thousands of wildfire evacuees. That was part of the reason the Vice President of the BC and Yukon branch of the Canadian Red Cross paid the city a visit to talk about the recovery efforts.
“Today we talked about things that took place during the wildfire evacuation process here in Prince George,” says Mayor Lyn Hall. “And some of the things that I thought, and others have commented on, about streamlining the [registration] process”
The Red Cross says the recovery effort will take years for the communities most adversely impacted by the fires. But working on some of the wrinkles, such as the registration process, can be done quickly. And the City of Prince George will be part of the solution.
“As a national disaster organization, Red Cross has seen the increase in disasters, increases in frequency and severity, over the past few years,” says Kimberley Nemrava with the Red Cross. “And so we’ve actually invested in the development of a digital registration system. It’s still in development and we’re working closely with the government of BC and the City of Prince George to pilot this digital registration system.”
$119.3 million dollars has been spent on the recovery efforts to date.
