Masich Place Debate Getting Hotter

PRINCE GEORGE – The City is tightening up the rules around the use of Masich Place Stadium. Friday morning, a crew of forest firefighters inadvertently got onto the track to do some training but were ushered out. Public access to the newly renovated facility has become contentious. Details of the operational plan for Masich now show it will be open to the public from six in the morning to one in the afternoon.

“Instead of celebrating the opening of this beautiful facility, we’re putting out fires. It’s really unfortunate. There are people that work shift work, there are people who may not be able to get there earlier in the day, there are people who work daytime,” says Councillor Brian Skakun.

Formerly, the stadium was open from dawn to dusk. The new hours of public access baffle members of the public.

“We work during the day all the time, so we won’t get to use it. Probably ever,” said one user.

“If it’s not being used, then I think the public should be able to use it whenever they want to” said another. “We paid for it right? If we’re paying for it, then we should be able to use it.”

The operational plan will see staff on site to manage the use of the facility, undertake the necessary maintenance and provide customer service. It also cites concerns over vandalism. But Brian Skakun maintains the best security is extra eyes.  When you have more people in a facility, the less opportunity there is vandalism.

A report is being presented to Council Monday night.
