Prince George A Sport For Life Community
PRINCE GEORGE – Mayor and Council have given a cluster of sports-related organization the go-ahead to pursue the idea of becoming a Canadian Sport for Life community. The cluster of organizations is headed up by Engage Sport North, but it also includes Tourism Prince George, who says they can use that designation.
“We’re always bidding on events in conjunction with the City and with the local sports groups. Trying to get events to come to town,” explains Leanne Schinkel, the Manager of Sport and Event Development for Tourism Prince George. “This could be such a big piece of the bid. We’ve got the volunteer piece, which is great. And now we have this Sport for Life community piece.”
She says Prince George was placed on the national sporting stage in 2015 with the Canada Winter Games when the nation came to realize how much a major sporting community it is. It was also an event that drew together the various different sporting organizations, from badminton to ringette. But the challenge is maintaining those connections, which this endeavour may achieve.
