Ice Safety Recommended

PRINCE GEORGE – The recent weather has left area lakes frozen over, and there’s no shortage of locals out skating and enjoying the ice. But those frozen surfaces always come with a risk.

There are some tips to keep in mind if you venture out, especially with much warmer conditions in the forecast through this week.

“Just be aware that because you do an assessment on one spot has no bearing on everywhere else,  that conditions can change within a metre or two. Avoid areas in any inlets or outlets around lakes and marshy spots tend to be a little suspect as well, especially early in the season. Step onto the ice cautiously, and continue to assess it as you go,” said ice expert Lauren Phillips.

Every lake has different features, and care should be taken toward the centre of the lake because it is where the water is deepest and the ice most shallow.
