Recycled Tire Floors Inside Elksentre Arena
PRINCE GEORGE – The Elksentre Arena in the Hart has a new look thanks to a grant the City of Prince George recently received for more than 25 thousand dollars from Tire Stewardship BC.
Thanks to that grant, the Arena now features cushioned flooring in its walkways, lobby, skate shop, dressing, referee and storage rooms. The rubber flooring is made out of 4.5 tonnes of rubber from 670 recycled tires. These recycled floors improve the durability, shock absorption, maintenance, and resistance inside the arena.
The City’s Manager of Community Arenas, Wade Loukes says these floors may be the future for hockey rinks.
“With the recycled tires, we’re always looking at any sort of green or recycling opportunities within the city as well so it’s a pretty easy sell when we’re following up on that. This type of flooring is used in many facilities, you know my contacts in local hockey communities around the province are going this way as well and so the research we do, if there is any sort of challenges with the product, you know are the user groups happy? Are your cleaning staff happy? And the answer is yes to that.”
