PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George RCMP has provided an update surrounding the details of an incident involving a child that occurred yesterday on Ospika Boulevard.

It occurred at around 11 a.m. yesterday in a parking lot near Massey Drive. Originally police said a child was struck by a vehicle backing up in a parking lot with a parent close by.

However, following further investigation police now say “this has found to be incorrect.”

“The investigation has led officers to believe that an adult female driver travelling southbound on Ospika Boulevard bypassed the meridian and travelled against traffic flow for a short distance, before entering the parking lot of a retail strip mall,” Cpl. Craig Douglass says.

“The driver was travelling in a small SUV. The child was standing near a parent that was tending to a younger child. The driver struck the child and one tire drove completely over the mid-section of the three-year-old.”

He says the child was taken to hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Douglass says the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and charges against the driver are expected.
