PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George RCMP is warning the public about a recent spike in distraction thefts around town.

Cpl. Craig Douglass says that over the past 24 hours, Mounties have received three reports from the public of personal belongings being stolen while victims were being distracted by an accomplice.

In one case last night, he says police responded to a theft from the Roll-a-Dome facility. He says officers arrived to learn that an adult male and adult female entered the business and stole a backpack.

“One suspect distracted the victim while the other stole the backpack,” Douglass says.

Also last night, he says officers responded to two separate reports from the public that advised their purses were stolen while they were in large retail stores in Prince George.

“In both cases, the victims were distracted by one suspect while another stole their purse from a shopping cart. An adult male and an adult female were suspects in both cases and are believed to be responsible for all three thefts.”

Douglass says an adult female was arrested by police following the third incident and later released on a Promise to Appear for court later this spring. He notes the male suspect has not yet been located or identified.

In light of these incidents, Douglass is reminding the public to keep valuables with them at all times when shopping whenever possible, place the purse strap over your head and across your body.

If you have any information about these thefts, you are asked to call the Prince George RCMP at (250)561-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-8477.
